Catch Of The Week – ‘Shwimmers’

Given the amount of great music coming out of Wales at the moment I’m beginning to think they’re putting something in the water. And if that’s the case then watch out, because if there’s one thing the Welsh aren’t short of it’s the wet stuff!

Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of ‘A Tribe Called Quest’

Last month saw the US release of what we think should be a very interesting and revealing film, ‘Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of ‘A Tribe Called Quest’.  The film, three years in the making from actor and director Michael Rapaport is an insightful, Cinema Verite styled documentary which delves into the music, relationships and lives of one of the most influential and iconic groups in recent Hip Hop history, A Tribe Called Quest.

Catch Of The Week – Crepe Soles (Sweater Beats Remix)

So, those of you that have been following us for some time may remember the man behind this weeks Catch Of The Week.  He is none other than Brooklyn’s Sweater Beats (aka Antonio Cuna), and the post I’m referring to was on the outstanding 1444 mixtape he put together for Gold Coast Trading Co earlier this year – Fourteen minutes and 44 seconds of  top notch hip-hop funk inspired vintage African folk (check it here).

Greg Enemy – Xtra Small

Kansas City’s Greg Enemy has been turning heads recently with his new mixtape album ‘xtra small’.  The 12 track record features Enemy rhyming his smooth, thoughtful and slightly sneaky lyrics over borrowed beats from artists such as Samiyam, heRobust, Dallas AustinTLC.

Keepin’ It Peel

To celebrate John Peel Day today we thought we’d do just what the great man himself was so good at and share some music.  In memory of Peel’s unrivalled eclecticism and ear for an oddity, we’ve chosen four tracks that move from the hardcore to the heady to the just plain hard-to-imagine-what-they-were-thinking!

Catch of the Week – ‘Damyarea’ (Area Song)

From Manchester we take a long journey south to sweltering West Africa for this weeks catch. It’s presented to us by a DJ/Producer that we’ve been interested in for some time now, on a Label who’s tunes we’ve been playing out for even longer - Chief Boima and the amazing Akwaaba label.  Set up specifically to access, support and promote African music (and make real money for the artists in the process!) Akwaaba is a genuine force for good in record label land, not to mention a very welcome window into what would otherwise be very hard to find music.

Gang Colours ‘In Your Gut Like A Knife’ Remixes

Back in June this year young Southampton producer Gang Colours aka Will Ozanne dropped his first EP ‘In Your Gut Like a Knife‘ on Brownswood Recordings.  Tipped off by Ghostpoet as one to watch in 2012, Gilles Peterson apparently snapped up Ozanne after just a quick listen to his tracks.  Expecting a lot from the Brownswood newbie we are watching intently for his next move, so when this ‘In Your Gut Like a Knife Remix’ EP was announced last week (FOR FREE) we suddenly found ourselves with our very own, excited, pain in the gut!

Catch Of The Week – ‘Secrets (Blynk Rmx)’

Blynk has really delivered the goods with this lush little number, a remix of fellow Manchester resident Numan’s 2009 dubstep favourite ‘Secrets’.

El Buho – A Guide to the Birds of South America [RNR001]

I’ve been tracking this guy for some time now and am a big fan, probably as I get the impression he has similar tastes in music to me.  El Buho (translates to The Owl) has been posting unique South American influenced tracks on Soundcloud, not too dissimilar from those of Argentinian producer Chancha Via Circuito, for the past year now and they’re starting to make a real impact on listeners.
