The second instalment of the Dub Bait Mix Series is brought to us by eclectic worldwide selecta ‘Tim Teaandcakes’, of Teaandcakesrecords. A long-time UK representative of all things tropical, Tim has been tirelessly championing Global Bass music on his radio show ‘The Free Range Show’ on ‘Space Invader Radio’ for the past two and a half years now.
Massively diverse and touching on many aspects of global, beat driven sounds, Tim’s show has built up a following of listeners with a love for interesting, varied and ultimately hard to access World Music (sorry, I know that term is frowned upon, but ya catch me drift), particularly focusing on Cumbia, Afrobeat, Moombahton, African, Reggae, Electronica, along with a healthy and essential dose of Hip-Hop. Read more about his label as well as the conception of Space Invader Radio after the tracklisting.
Surprisingly, away from the radio show Teaandcakes Records deal with an entirely different and more UK led musical movement, in the form of Leftfield Electronica, and with releases from the likes of Brotto, Bandshell and Railster, it’s definitely worth checking out.
For DBM002 Tim spins tunes old and new, with a varied selection that reflects his broard appreciation of diverse and exciting music from around the world. Best described as a lively mix of Global Bass, Moombahton and UKfunky with a dusting of Cumbia and Tech Bass, all whisked together in a tropical party vibe, this mix explores musical developments far over the UK horizon.

Space Invader Radio - ”In 2004, upon closure of what was Eat the Beat (Bristol’s finest ever record shop) the DJ and producer collective born out of the shop spread out to the far reaches of space. Records were released independently of one another, and they still worked as DJs but never together. Until March 2008, when the Founders of the station tinkered around and found that it was relatively easy to transmit 130bpm squelchy bass noises across space. When a birthday bought them all back together, they unleashed their idea on the rest of the crew. They were back in business and the station was born.
Anyone who ever stepped into Eat The Beat knew they were in the arms of a loving family. It was simply the friendliest record shop ever to open its doors. Never Exclusive always inclusive, music was listened to, loved, talked about, laughed about and all over a brew. So now that love and that music policy are simply transmitted onto and out of the radio station. The DJs began by playing each other the records they loved, but very quickly they gathered like minded ears and the listener base has expanded ever since – like every good musical movement should …something from nothing. Each Member of the original crew had a musical speciality they could bring to the table, be that Disco, Drum and Bass, Breaks, Hip hop, Soul, Funk, Reggae, or House, but add to that the new shows that have joined since its inception and its becoming a more phenomenal roster with every passing week.”
Tim’s programme, The Free Range Show, is broadcast on the first Wednesday of every month between 6pm and 8pm UK time. As the name suggests it wanders across several music genres but there is always a big chunk of World Bass, Cumbia, Moombahton, Tropical and often includes guest mixes from around the globe. It then gets archived on Mixcloud.
