WIZRD Collective

It was via a collection of crisp House remixes from French producer Dehousy that we first stumbled across the WIZRD Collective late last year, and since then they’ve put out a steady trickle of great tracks – House and otherwise – in the process forming a clear but unblinkered style and ethos.  Centred around trappy, swaggy, drum-led sounds that never take themselves too seriously – from the tongue-in-cheek Hip-Hop of Miami’s Metro Zu to the sleazy percussive workouts of Melbourne’s Lucid – it seems that the key ingredient for the wizrd collective is the fun!

They’re a real fledgling label/collective as far as web presence goes, and so far the only way to download releases is one track at a time via their (criminally under-visited!) soundcloud page.  For some reason I like that they’ve not even bothered with a bandcamp page yet – laziness or exclusivity? either way it keeps you on your toes :/  This ‘soundcloud only’ approach doesn’t mean the quality isn’t there though; they’ve recently shared fresh EP’s from Dehousy, Swipa and Lucid, and with a growing rosta of artists that now includes BOSSTONE, Mohegan Son, A Sol Mechanic, G.Vibes and Parma we’re expecting some big stuff to come out of the WIZRD camp in the future.

So to put a spotlight on the Collective we’ve picked out some favourites from the latest releases, along with a couple of highlights from the back catalogue.  Soak these up first, then go grab the rest HERE

Dehousy – Sunlight - Taken from the Hooligan Disco EP.  The appropriately named title track from Dehousy’s latest release is an unusual, electro thwomper, but it’s the b-side that wins it for us – Sunlight builds from a simple Dubstep beginning into a unique, euphoric jam with a distinctly French feel.

Lucid – TD Room - Taken from the Ballroom EP.  Lucid is clearly a fan of filthy humour (this is billed as ‘Facial Fest Bass’, and is backed by a track entitled ‘Bukkake Ballroom‘) but he also has a knack for combining the smut with a quality beat, so we’ll let him off.

Metro Zu – Dippin - I’ve got a real softspot for Metro Zus tongue-in-cheek ‘LSD Swag‘ (from the CSPG release) but it’s the accompanying Dippin that packs the most punch, with tight drums and blunted rhymes.

A Sol Mechanic – [Almst(Touching)] - L.A. Resident A.S.M. Makes mellow glitch with real flare.  Big fan of this one!

Bambounou – Heroic Deeds (Dehousy Rmx) - This is the track that first made me take notice of WIZRD. Bambounou’s original (out now on Youngunz)  gets a refreshing makeover from Dehousy.

Lucid – Shh (Dehousy Rmx) - Dehousy again on remix duties – this time for fellow wizrd Lucid.  A real stomper, with driving 808 drums and a howling synth.

Lil Scrappy – Money In The Bank (Mohegan Son Legboot) - An early offering from our favourite New Yorker Mohegan Son.  He’s put out some brilliant tracks recently, and this early bootleg hints at the unique, seductive brand of bass music he has since cultivated.

Aside from the singles WIZRD also have a great mixtape series, the Galactic Swag Sessions.  The latest, 3rd instalment from Barcelona’s Felix M. Dowell picks up where BOSSTONE and G.Vibes left off, with some serious spacey swag!  You can stream and download the latest session below and then listen to the others on Mixcloud.
