We’ve got a nice topical Catch for you this week. Following yesterday’s Euro 2012 football matches and Ukraine’s history-making win in Kiev, we thought we’d honour Shevchenko’s 2 goals with some cold techy footwork from his fellow countryman and Kiev resident Bronza.
Released yesterday, Blood Thirsty is taken from Volume.5 of the brilliant World Wide Juke free download series. We posted about WWJ just before Volume.1 dropped, excited by what lay in store after hearing Juke Ellington‘s teaser mix. Well they’re now five releases into the weekly series, and hopefully like us you’ve been following and loving what’s come since. In fairness Vol.5 is littered with contenders for COTW, but yesterday belongs to Ukraine so we’ve got to give this one to Bronza!
A lot of people have toyed with blending Juke and Drum & Bass sounds recently, but generally they’ve focussed on jungle and jump-up vibes. Blood Thirsty on the other hand is the first Juke track I’ve heard that has reminded me of the late 90′s ‘Techstep‘ style. OK I know this was far from a popular era in Dn’B's chequered history, but for better or worse Blood Thirsty‘s clinical drums, icy synth lead, rumbling rasping atmospherics and cinematic vocal samples take me back to the Dn’B dancefloors of 1998.
Bronza - Blood Thirsty
With fresh cuts from the likes of Chicago’s DJ Phil (TEKLIFE, Ghettoteknitianz) and our favourite Texan Galactic Zack, alongside others from around the States and as far afield as Japan, Volume.5 of WWJ is well worth a (free!) download, as are the previous four. We reckon they’ve all been top class so far, offering a neat little window into the current wave of varied and inventive global footwork. As well as featuring unheard tracks from familiar producers they’ve also brought a lot of new names to the table (some still sounding a bit rough around the edges it has to be said, but showing real talent nonetheless), and we’re enjoying the series so much we had to shout about it again, just in case you’ve been missing out.
Click on the artwork below to download Volume.5 then get yourselves over HERE for the rest. And don’t forget to check back in with WWJ every Monday for the latest instalment of weekly juke joy.
