Catch of the Week – This Goes Under

This week’s Catch comes courtesy of relative newcomers Maribou State (pictured above) in the form of a deep, catchy, sampled vocal number that might be best described as ‘Steppy House’.

‘Steppy House’ - because it’s not quite Garage, not strictly House and a fair way off UK funky in its rhythms.  It’s the tight double beats from the kick and bass before the second snare that are so typical of Maribou State and seemingly break down the pace of the track, allowing them to go deeper and pull out a different groove to your usual classic vocal garage.  Hence the term ‘steppy’.

Hot off the heels of their most recent release on Southern Fried entitled ‘Native EP‘ (featured above) ‘This Goes Under’ is as much of a promo as it is a quality selfless offering, although I can’t see how it didn’t make the EP against ‘The Look‘ and ‘Rush Don’t Run‘, it’s a much better track! That said, it may not have been on offer – either way though, it’s one hell of a freebie. Maybe more in the mainstream underground than we usually go for, although to be fair the guys have only been producing together for just over a year and we’re incredibly impressed with all the attention they’ve drawn in such a short time.
